| This is one of my best hikes in the park. Starting in the lower parking lot below the Tarrywile Mansion is where you start your hike. You can see the statue of Mother Mary across the street as well as a church on West Street. Now hike over the small hill to the red barn. There you can view a map of the park that has over 21 miles of trails on 722 Acres. You may even find a free trails map in the dispenser next to the large map of the park. Here you will see the large fields of grass. Now hike past the big red silo to Parks Pond. Here you will hike around Parks Pond on the left side of the dam. At the end of the left side of Parks Pond you will hike close to a cliff. Then back around the other side through tall pine trees where you end up on the large grass field looking back at the red barn and silo. From here you will start hiking towards the big green water tower. As you are above the water tower you will have your first awesome view of Danbury. Now follow the trail over the hill where the trail splits Back Pond and Tarrywile Lake. Here you will hike the trail to the right. This is where you will have the toughest part of the trail as you climb to an elevation of 900ft. and end up at the Light Beacon. From there the trail zig zags then ends up leading you to the left were you will end up at the Mootry Peak look out. Here you can enjoy incredible views of Danbury all the way to Lake Candlewood, plus views of over 20 miles away on a clear day. Now it is time to start your hike down. Hiking to the left back down the other side to where the trail splits Back Pond and Tarrywile Lake. From here you will back track to the water tower then to Parks Pond where you will meet the trail that takes you across Brushy Hill Road to the Hearthstone Castle built in 1899. Then after that it’s a quick walk back across the street pass the Gazebo to the parking lot next to the Tarrywile Mansion. Next to the Mansion is another lookout. Walk through the grape vine archway tunnel past the old water fountain then its just a few steps up next to the big oak tree. Here you can look out over the big grass field towards the light beacon. After that its back down the driveway past the mansion to the to the parking lot where your hike started. Around 2 hours & 5 Miles, very nice! |
